vegetarian cheese

I wonder if this thought has occurred to other people:-

"A vegan who opposes genetically modified food cannot eat any cheese".

Why may this be? Traditional cheese making requires "rennet", a protein extracted from cows which process protein in milk.

Now, if one is a vegan, any material originating from animal is unacceptable. Therefore cheese marketed for vegetarian relies on modern biotechnology to overcome the source of crucial ingredient. Vegetarian cheese is made with rennet proteins by genetically modified organisms (bacteria, yeast etc).

Therefore, a vegan against GM food cannot eat any cheese. I think this illustrates several points:-
  • GM may be present where people may not be aware.
  • Products from "good old times" isn't necessarily compatible with modern trends.
  • One has to draw a line of compromise to go with the flow of things.
PS: a search into wikipedia describes that vegetarian cheese must not always rely on GM for its production. Apparently some fungi species can emulate the effect of rennet on milk.
